Detection & Tracking
Detection Training
In detection training, the dog learns to recognize a specific scent, actively search for it, and provide a clear indication when the scent is found. This form of training is applied worldwide by customs and police, among others, where dogs are used to detect, for example, narcotics, explosives, or money.
Within detection sports, we work with carefully selected scents that are permitted by the detection association. These are often herbal scents that are safe for the dog and practical to use within the sport.
Dogs primarily experience the world through their noses. Scent plays a major role in their perception and communication. Searching for scents is therefore a natural instinct, which not only makes detection training effective but also very enriching for the dog.
Although some breeds excel in detection work, in principle, every dog is suitable—regardless of breed, age, or size. Detection training demonstrably contributes to the dog's self-confidence. By learning to work independently and make choices, the dog develops more initiative and mental stability.
During the lessons, we use food or play rewards, depending on what motivates the dog most. By tapping into intrinsic motivation, the dog often learns scent recognition quickly and with pleasure.
The indication behavior is taught separately. This "splitting" method ensures that the dog learns without pressure and prevents negative associations. Additionally, this approach makes it possible to improve or rebuild each component separately if necessary.
Once both scent recognition and indication are well developed, we expand the training. The dog then learns to distinguish scents (discrimination), and we introduce various search forms, such as:
-
search walls
-
rooms
-
vehicles
-
people
Exams and Competitions
Within detection sports, there are five exam levels, from Beginner to Guru.
Before you can participate in an exam, the dog must possess the scent test certificate. This certificate can be obtained during our lessons.
If there is sufficient interest, we organize exams in Portugal, supervised by recognized judges. Participation in national competitions within Portugal is also possible.
Tracking
In tracking, the dog follows a human scent. It works out a trail that a person has walked and learns to follow it accurately. This trail can lead the dog to an object with human scent or to the person themselves.
Tracking requires a different form of cooperation than detection. Where detection focuses on locating a specific scent source, tracking involves following a scent trail step-by-step over often longer distances.
This discipline requires more physical effort from both dog and handler. For this reason, tracking is not suitable for everyone, but for many dogs, it offers a great mental and physical challenge.
Within Lobo Azul, we offer tracking lessons. However, at present, there are no exams or competitions associated with this discipline.
What do we stand for?
We stand for fair and respectful cooperation between dog and handler. The focus is on connection, trust, and positive reinforcement.
We work with:
-
intrinsic motivation
-
reward-based training
-
clear structure and progression
We use resets when necessary, but we do not use corrections. In this way, we create a safe learning environment in which the dog can develop optimally.
